From all of us at Cherry Hill Park, thank you for the second consecutive year of an A grade from camper surveys! Thank you also for voting us into Good Sam’s top 100 list of “America’s Favorite Campgrounds.” Overall, it’s been a good year for us, and we hope all of our guests are able to say the same. 2012 will bring big changes for CHP as we hope to begin our renovation project, which (with a little luck) will include luxury cabins, a new bathhouse, a splash playground and a new mini golf course. We’ll update as the time comes. Happy holidays and have a wonderful new year!

Model Trains at Union Station

Thanksgiving At Cherry Hill Park

Cherry Hill Park is inviting all campground guests for Thanksgiving Dinner at the Conference Center Ballroom. Thursday, November 24 at 3:00 pm.

We hope that you can join us. The campground will provide the turkey and ham with all the usual side dishes. Please bring a dessert to share. For those interested we will be collecting canned food items for a local food pantry.

Please RSVP at the office if you can attend.

Happy Veterans Day

It may be too late to plan a trip to DC this weekend, but it isn’t too late to thank our Veterans.

If you do want to come, there are plenty of Veterans Day Activities in Washington. There are plenty of sites, memorials, and monuments that are worth visiting in honor of the nation’s vets –this weekend or any weekend.

Halloween: Where Will You be?

Happy October everyone! We hope you’re all enjoying the last few weeks of warm weather.

Don’t forget to come visit us at Cherry Hill Park at the end of the month for some exciting Halloween activities. More details will be here soon, but here’s a sneak peak of what is to come:

Trick-or-treating, a haunted trail, pumpkin carving, tractor rides, a Halloween movie (outside, weather permitting), a potluck dinner on Friday, and a pancake breakfast on Sunday–free for those who participate. Also, make sure you bring your costumes for the party and costume contest!

Washington Nationals

Come to DC to enjoy a Nats game before the season ends! From Cherry Hill Park, simply board the 83 bus, exit at College Park Metro Station, and then follow the green line until you get to Navy Yard Metro Station. From there, just walk out of the station and you’ll be a block away from the National’s Stadium. The next home game is Friday, September 23. There are only a few more games left, so hurry up and buy those tickets now!

I feel the earth move under my feet

If you were in the DC area August 23, you probably felt the earthquake that reached over a dozen US states. Starting northwest of Richmond, Virginia, the earthquake managed to shake up quite a bit of land, even several Canadian provinces. In Washington, DC, minor damage was found in the Washington National Cathedral (flying buttresses cracked), the Embassy of Ecuador in Washington, DC (walls and chimneys cracked), the Smithsonian Castle (turrets damaged), the National Museum of Natural History (specimen jars cracked), and lastly the Washington Monument (cracks near the top). None of the damage seems to be permanent, and will hopefully be repaired soon, although the Washington Monument is said to be closed indefinitely.

On an interesting side note, animals have been known to react to natural disasters before the fact, in anticipation of what is to come. A few instances at the Smithsonian National Zoological Park show evidence to this–fifteen minutes before the quake, the red-ruffed lemurs sounded an alarm, seconds before, the apes rushed to the top of a tree-like structure, abandoning their food during feeding time, and immediately before, the flamingos grouped and huddled together in a flock.

MLK, Jr. Memorial (3/3)

I ~~have~~ had a dream last night…
it was the morning of August 22 and I couldn’t wait to see the Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial open at last! I grabbed my coffee and almost made it out the door, when I realized that I didn’t know how to get there, where to go or what to bring! Fortunately, it was just a nightmare, and I still have a week before opening day. But to make sure this doesn’t happen to you, I’ve listed all of the last minute reminders you need to know about the Dedication Ceremony here:

-Since the subway system will be busy on the 22, the best Metro stop to get to the Dedication Ceremony coming from Cherry Hill Park will be L’Enfant Plaza. It is located on the Green Line. If you prefer to drive, RFK Stadium will have available parking spaces and a shuttle that will take you to the Dedication.

-You are not allowed to bring large bags or backpacks into the dedication. Only pre-packaged food is allowed and beverages must come in plastic bottles. Food will be available to buy with cash only.

- Areas with wheelchair access are available but no wheelchairs will be provided.

- Bring sunscreen and hats! It is still hot and sunny in DC late August, and sunburn is not fun. Just in case of rain, a poncho or an umbrella might be a good idea as well. Look at the weather ahead of time to prepare.

- If you haven’t bought your tickets yet, do so now. There will be areas available where you don’t need a ticket, but it will most likely enhance your experience with a better view.

Peace Corps 50th Anniversary

Since 1961, the Peace Corps have sent over 200,000 volunteers and trainees to 139 different countries to promote peace and better the lives of communities and individuals around the world.
